Synopsis: In this first part of a five-part series, Pastor John Weaver clarifies biblical terminology regarding 'Jews,' arguing that it is unbiblical to refer to all Israelites as Jews. He distinguishes between ethnic Judahites (descendants of Judah or inhabitants of Judea) and religious Jews (adherents of Judaism). Weaver contends that Jesus Christ was not a Jew in the religious sense because He opposed Judaism and its traditions, but was a Judahite by tribe, a Nazarene, and a Galilean. He also introduces the Khazar theory, suggesting many modern Jews are not physical descendants of Abraham. The lecture aims to correct misunderstandings, identify the enemies of Christ, and emphasize that Jesus is King of the Jews by virtue of being the true Son of David and Son of God.

Introduction and Purpose of the Series

Weaver introduces the five-part series 'Jews, Judaism, and Christianity' and states his purpose: to clarify terms, instruct in hermeneutics, identify enemies of Christ, and show that ancient issues persist today.

Well, let's open our Bibles today, if you would please, to Matthew 27:29. Matthew 27:29. Yes, sir. Matthew 27:29.

And let me tell you, today is going to be the first part of a five-part series. The title of the message happens to be "Jews, Judaism, and Christianity." So Matthew 27:29: "And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews." So let me begin by asking you this question: Is Jesus Christ the King of the Jews? If so, how and why is He their King? Moreover, another question is this: Have you ever considered the word "Jews" in Scripture? When did it first appear in Scripture? What is meant by the term? In our day and time, most people ignorantly and unbiblically refer to all Israelites as Jews. It is improper as well as unbiblical to refer to all Israelites as Jews. Why is it important to know the difference? Well, I could ask this question: Who was it that harassed and persecuted and ultimately crucified the Lord Jesus Christ? Who also harassed and persecuted the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ? Who were the enemies of Christ? And who were the enemies of the apostles in the New Testament?

And here's a little teaser for the next study in this series. Think about this: Were any of the apostles of our Lord Jews? Just stop and think about that. Now, why am I asking these questions? Well, I'm going to give you my purpose. I'm going to answer it negatively and positively. So let me tell you what my purpose is in bringing these five messages, which I've entitled "Jews, Judaism, and Christianity." First of all, negatively, I'm not asking these questions in order to create strife or animosity. I'm not asking these questions for the purpose of harassing, condemning, or stirring up fleshly hatred. I do not have as my purpose to create division or separation between any believers at all. Many will see and understand the truth that I'm going to share with you from Scripture, and some will not.

It is not my intention to separate brethren. However, if they separate over truth, truth is still truth. I can't control that. And so, I'm going to be sharing a lot of things with you from Scripture. First and foremost, it is my purpose in asking and endeavoring to answer these questions to clarify terms, avoid confusion, and correct misunderstanding. Second, it is also my intention and purpose to instruct in hermeneutical principles, that is, the art and the science of interpreting the Bible. Thirdly, it is my purpose and my intention to identify the enemies of Jesus Christ and the enemies of His people. We're going to find today that we're basically facing the same enemies. Fourth, it is my purpose and my intention to convey a biblical understanding in order that we may see that the issues that were in the days of Jesus Christ are the same issues that are in our day and time.

The Edomite and Khazar Issues

Weaver briefly addresses the Edomite connection (Herods) and the Khazar theory, citing DNA research and Jewish scholars to argue that most modern Jews are not Semitic descendants of Abraham.

An interesting thing is this: You have to understand that circumstances may have changed, but the issues have not changed. The issues are basically still the same. I want you to understand something as we go. It is not my intention in this brief series to deal with the Edomites. Now, the Edomites occupied the land south of Judah. I've given you a map. If you will look down at Beersheba, on the bottom of the map, you see the word "Idumaea." The word "Idumaea," or "Idumaean" when you refer to an inhabitant of Idumaea, refers to Edom or to Esau.

Now, if you would look in your Bibles very quickly to Genesis 36, Genesis 36, and let's begin looking there at verse 1. Genesis 36:1. We will skip down and read a few verses. Notice Genesis 36:1.

Scripture Reading — Genesis 36:1, 6-8
"Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom. Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan."

And then they begin telling us all of the wives and all the children. And when you get to verse 6, "And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob." In other words, he's leaving Canaan and he's going south. Watch carefully, verse 7: "For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle. Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir." Esau is Edom.

Scripture Reading — Genesis 36:1, 6-8
"And these are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in mount Seir."

So, you have here Esau, who is the father of the Edomites.

Now, let me just simply point out the fact that there are Edomite Jews. And this is why I'm telling you I'm not necessarily dealing with this issue. But the Herods in the New Testament were an Edomite family that ruled Israel, especially the southern kingdom of Judah, during the time of the earthly ministry of our Lord and during the first Christian church. Now, the Jewish ruling council was the Sanhedrin. The Sanhedrin was under the authority of Herod. Herod was under the authority of the Roman Emperor or the Roman Empire. The Herods came to power in 47 B.C. You have to remember there was more than one Herod in the New Testament. But when Julius Caesar appointed Antipater, the son of the Edomite governor of Edom, to be governor of Judea, Herod was one of the sons of Antipater. Antipater had two sons; Herod was one of them. In 40 B.C., the Parthians, whom we now know as the Iranians, attacked the border of the eastern fringe of the Roman Empire, and they conquered Judea. Herod escaped to Rome. When he got into Rome, and they discovered everything that had happened, then the Romans pronounced Herod king of the Jews, and sent him back to reconquer Judea, which he did in 37 B.C. So the Herods then held power in this land for many, many years. And once again, there were a multitude of Herods. We normally think of Herod the Great, but there were other Herods and other rulers, like Archelaus, in the same family.

So it's not my intention to deal with the Edomites, although they are certainly connected here as well. Now, secondly, it's not my purpose today to deal with what I'm going to call the Khazar issue. I'm certainly going to give you an overview of it very quickly, and I will explain it. And if you want to do some further study on your own, I'll tell you where you should be reading and what you should be studying.

So, in the 8th century, the ruler of Khazaria embraced Judaism. Actually, it was Talmudic Judaism. And since he was the ruler of Khazaria, he then ordered and commanded all of his people to embrace Judaism as well. Many of the modern-day Jews have no Semitic blood in them whatsoever. Let me say this again: Many, in fact, most of the Jews today are not the physical descendants of Abraham. They are Khazars. They come totally, not even from that area, but also from Turkey, Mongolia. Now, if you want to read a good book on this, you can read Arthur Koestler's book, who is Jewish, by the way. He wrote a book entitled "The Thirteenth Tribe." And, of course, you know there were only twelve tribes. But he called it the 13th tribe because the Khazars now have embraced Talmudic Judaism, and most of those now are in control, even in this day and time.

Now, I'm going to give you two other articles. The first one is this: "DNA research sheds light on the ancestry of the Ashkenazi Jews." The date is October 8, 2013. The source is the University of Huddersfield. Here's the summary, I'm quoting: "Many of the maternal ancestors of modern Ashkenazi Jews were European converts, according to new research. Analysis of DNA samples has shown that on the female line, the Ashkenazim are descended not from the Near East, but from Southern and Western Europe."

Now, if you wish to get further information on this, here's another book you can read. The title of it is "DNA Science and the Jewish Bloodline" by Texe Marrs. And let me give you just a couple of paragraphs that are just absolutely astounding, and they are written by two Jewish scholars. And he's quoting them in this book. And here's the first one: "The undeniable evidence of this has become clear with the advent of DNA research." "In 2001, Dr. Ariella Oppenheim and her team at Tel Aviv University released their study which found that the Jews were mainly Khazars from Khazaria, a Caucasus country which is now called Kazakhstan, Georgia, and other names. The Khazarians converted from pagan religion to Talmudic Judaism after the 8th century. But, of course, racially, they remain Khazars. The Khazars were an origin that is mainly Turkish and Mongolian blood." Now, I'm still quoting: "Thus, when you see a Jew today, you're actually encountering a Khazar who practices Judaism. The Khazar has no Israelite blood."

He goes on to state this. Listen carefully. "In late 2012, yet another Israeli-born scientist, Dr. Eran Elhaik of the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine, Johns Hopkins Medical University, published his research in the Journal of Biology and Evolution, considered by geneticists worldwide as the definitive study and peer-approved. This authoritative research confirmed Dr. Oppenheim's earlier findings and even went further." Now, I'm quoting again: "There are no blood or family connections among the Jews," reported Dr. Elhaik, a Jew himself. "The various groups of Jews in the world today do not share a common genetic origin."

"Their genome is largely Khazar. Whatever Israelite blood the Khazar Jews have," added Dr. Elhaik, "it is minuscule." So here are two Jewish scholars saying that modern-day Ashkenazi Jews are not descendants of Abraham, they have no Semitic blood in them, and they are saying that their DNA proves that they are Khazarians, Mongolian and Turkish.

Biblical Definition of 'Jew'

Using the law of first mention in 2 Kings 16:6, Weaver defines 'Jew' as referring to people of the southern kingdom of Judah, not all Israelites. He explains the Hebrew and Greek terms.

Now, if you would turn in your Bibles, holding Matthew 27, but turn to the book of Revelation chapter 2, and then we'll look in Revelation chapter 3. The point I'm going to make is even in the time of Christ, there were individuals who claimed to be Jews who were not. And our Lord, of course, condemns them. So if you'll notice in Revelation 2:9, our Lord says,

Scripture Reading — Revelation 2:9
"I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan."

Then if you'll look in Revelation 3:9, again He says it like this:

Scripture Reading — Revelation 2:9
"Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee."

So our Lord is saying that, of course, there are some who claim to be Jews and they're not, just like there are plenty who claim to be Christians and are not, obviously. Now let me just say this.

It is ignorance as well as being unbiblical to refer to all Israelites as Jews. Listen carefully. The original Judahites were Israelites, but not all Israelites were Judahites. I'm going to show you that from the Bible. In fact, there were some who lived in Judea who did not necessarily at all times claim to be Judeans, and I'll explain why. If you look in your Bibles to Romans 11:1, the Apostle Paul said this concerning himself:

Scripture Reading — Romans 11:1
"I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin."

Now, note if you would, Paul claimed to be an Israelite, he also claimed to be the seed of Abraham, and he also said that he was of the tribe of Benjamin. Now, Benjamin had his inheritance in Judea along with the tribe of Judah. So the Apostle Paul could have said that he was an Israelite, a Benjamite, and a Judahite, but he did not.

He was sticking in this particular case with his tribal identity. He is saying that I'm a Benjamite and I am an Israelite. Now, Paul is just simply maintaining now the very fact that he is a descendant of Abraham, an Israelite, and a Benjamite. Now, did Paul ever claim to be a Judean? And the answer is yes, but you have to understand the context. So if you look in 1 Corinthians 9 to begin with, 1 Corinthians 9, and let's begin reading there with verse 19. 1 Corinthians 9:19. Watch this carefully now.

The apostle says, "For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; to them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some." So he said, "to the Jews, I became as a Jew." Now, an interesting thing is this. When the Apostle Paul's life was in danger, he used the fact that his tribe was an inheritor in Judea to his own benefit. For instance, if you look in your Bibles to Acts 21, and there's certainly nothing wrong with what he's doing, but look in Acts 21, and let's begin reading there with verse 37. Acts 21:37.

Scripture Reading — Acts 21:37-22:3
Now remember, the Jews have caught Paul, and they're trying to kill him, and the chief captain, Lysias, comes down and saves him, and he takes him back to the castle. And he is, of course, going to try to beat him and find out some information. But anyhow, here's what goes on right here. Look in Acts 21:37: "And as Paul was to be led into the castle, he said unto the chief captain, May I speak unto thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek?" So he was surprised that Paul could speak Greek. Then he asked, "Art not thou that Egyptian, which before these days madest an uproar, and leddest out into the wilderness four thousand men that were murderers? But Paul said, I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and, I beseech thee, suffer me to speak unto the people." Now, I want you to note, Paul said, "But I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia." Cilicia is not even in Palestine.

It's not in the land of Israel. It is in Asia Minor. Okay? Now watch. Verse 40: "And when he had given him licence, Paul stood on the stairs, and beckoned with the hand unto the people. And when there was made a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue, saying, Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you. (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,) I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day." So obviously now, Paul could say, yes, that he was a Judahite because his tribe had its inheritance in Judea, but he himself was born in Tarsus in Cilicia, which was in Asia Minor.

Now Asia Minor is not on the map, but Asia Minor would be up here, and it comes out like this. It would be like modern day Turkey is what it would be, actually. Now, I want you to look in your Bibles to the book of Joshua chapter 19 because we already know now that not only did the tribe of Judah have the land in Judea and the tribe of Benjamin, but also now I want you to note the Simeonites were also in Judea. So we're looking in the book of Joshua at chapter 19 and let's just read a couple of verses. So look if you would Joshua 19:1. The land is being divided and

Scripture Reading — Joshua 19:1, 9
"the second lot came forth to Simeon, even for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah."

Now skip down to verse 9:

Scripture Reading — Joshua 19:1, 9
"Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon: for the part of the children of Judah was too much for them: therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them."

So, in this southern kingdom, if you look at the map, you see Judea.

Right up above it, you see a line going all the way across, right up above Emmaus. This line indicates the boundary between the southern kingdom and the northern kingdom. So anything in the southern kingdom then would belong to Benjamin, Judah, and Simeon. So there were three tribes that had their inheritance in the southern land.

Now the interesting thing is this. The Simeonites could also claim to be Judeans in the sense that they had their inheritance there. But usually they don't say that they were Jews or Judeans. They were Simeonites. That's why Paul in Romans 11 said he's a Benjamite. It's true they had their inheritance there in Judea, but he was still maintaining his tribal identity.

Now, you're going to run across two words, one in Hebrew, one in Greek. The Hebrew word that is translated "Jew" in our Bible is "Yehudi," which means a Judahite or a descendant of Judah. A Judahite is someone who lives in Judah or someone who is a descendant of Judah, who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob. That's where the twelve tribes came from. Here is how the word is used in the Bible. I'm going to add one additional way before I close. I don't mean today but before I get to the fifth, finish with the fifth message. But when you read the word "Jew" in the Bible, usually it means a person or persons from the tribe of Judah, or number two, the kingdom of Judah, or number three, the land of Judah or Judea, which would be all this southern land down here. So it's either someone from the land of Judea, or Judea, or someone from the tribe of Judah, or someone from the nation of Judah. This would be a southern nation, so to speak, or someone from the house of Judah. So the word "Jew" usually refers to anyone belonging to the tribe, the land, the nation, or the house of Judah, and these all could be called Judahites.

It also is used, number six, it is also used to refer to the religion of the Jews. I'm going to show you that in the Bible. In the New Testament, the Greek word is "Ioudaios," and literally it means Judean. In simple terms, Judean in the sense of the country or land, or hence someone from the nation, someone from that country, or someone from that land, or someone from the tribe of Judah. Now the first time the word "Jews" is used in the Bible is 2 Kings 16:6. If you would turn there, 2 Kings 16:6. By the way, Abraham was not a Jew. Abraham was a Chaldean. He was from Chaldea. Okay. Notice, if you would, 2 Kings 16:6. Here's the very first time the word "Jew" is used in the Bible. And by the way, let me just point out the fact, in hermeneutics, which is the art or science of Bible interpretation, there is a principle known as the law of first mention. The law of first mention just simply means this.

The very first time a word is used in the Bible, usually that is the way the word is going to be used throughout the entire Bible unless the context indicates otherwise. Okay, so usually you're going to find this word is used this way throughout the Bible with just a few exceptions. Okay, so watch this. Notice if you would 2 Kings 16:6: "At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria, and drave the Jews from Elath: and the Syrians came to Elath, and dwelt there unto this day." Now, the context, if you were to read 2 Kings 16:1-9, the context here tells us that there was a war between Judah, Israel, and Syria. And this war was over Elath. Elath was a port on the Red Sea which had formerly belonged to Edom. This seaport was captured by David and held by Judah until the time of Joram when Edom revolted against him. This seaport was recaptured by Amaziah because his son Azariah rebuilt it. If you would look back in 2 Kings 14:21-22.

Scripture Reading — 2 Kings 14:21-22
"And all the people of Judah took Azariah, which was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amaziah. He built Elath, and restored it to Judah."

So he had restored it. Now there is a war and the Syrians recapture Elath. And so what do they do? The Bible says they drove the Jews from Elath. Now, when the Syrians drove the Jews from Elath, who were they driving away? It was the people in the southern kingdom. It was the Judahites. David was king in the southern kingdom. He was king over all Israel, but he was king over the southern kingdom for a while. And then he was made king over all Israel, seven years first over the southern kingdom, then 33 years over the northern kingdom. Now, watch this.

Judaism vs. Christianity

Weaver argues that Judaism and Christianity are opposites, citing Paul's persecution of the church while in the Jews' religion. He rejects the term 'Judeo-Christian.'

I want you to understand something. It would be understandable that the Benjamites and the Simeonites would help the Judahites, would it not? Because they were all there in the southern kingdom. You would also have to remember this, that any king over the southern kingdom would also be king of the Judahites, the Simeonites, and the Benjamites. So he would have control of the entire army, which consisted of all of these.

So when the Bible says they drove the Jews out of Elath, that means this: from down here where that seaport was, they drove all these people back up into Judea. That's all. And so the very first time the word is mentioned in the Bible, it refers to people who are living in the southern kingdom. Now, John Gill, who was a Baptist pastor and Baptist historian, said this, and I'm quoting: "They were called Jews, but from the time the ten tribes were carried captive and not before." So the ten tribes were carried away captive in 722 B.C. So he said these southern people were not called Jews until after the ten northern tribes were carried away into captivity.

Now when you use the word "Jew" today, the word "Jew" does not denote a relationship to a land. It does not denote a relationship to a tribe or a country. But it is now used today primarily to refer to someone who holds the religion of Judaism. And by the way, it is used this way in the Bible. So, you could say that a Jew could be someone of the tribe of Judah, or someone from Judea, someone from that land, that country, or that southern nation, or it could be someone who had embraced Judaism.

So, if you will turn in your Bibles to Acts 26, Acts 26, and let's begin reading there with verse 3 maybe. Look in Acts 26. And notice if you would, the Apostle Paul is defending himself and he is speaking to Agrippa. In fact, let's begin reading there with verse 2. Look what he says to King Agrippa:

Scripture Reading — Acts 26:2-5
"I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews."

Now isn't that interesting? Paul is not claiming to be a Jew here. Remember, he's a Benjamite.

He was born in Judea. But I'm going to explain this by the time I get to number five. He says the Jews are accusing me. So it's someone separate than the Apostle Paul. Okay, now watch what he says in verse 3: "Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently." Now he says this: "My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews."

Now listen: "Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee." Notice he said, "after the most straitest sect of our religion," that's Judaism, "I lived a Pharisee." So, Judaism and Pharisaism are synonymous. They're one and the same thing. Paul said, if these Jews who are accusing me, if they would testify truthfully, they could tell you that when I was raised, I was raised from the straitest sect of Judaism in our religion. I was a Pharisee.

Now, look in your Bibles to the book of Galatians chapter 1, because he says it again, but this time it's even plainer. Notice, if you would, Galatians 1, and let's begin reading there with verse 13. Galatians 1:13. Paul writes,

Scripture Reading — Galatians 1:13-14
"For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: and profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers."

So this whole southern kingdom then was known as the Jewish nation or the Judahite nation.

Now, let me point something out before I go any further. It's important to note that the Jews' religion is not only antagonistic to Christianity, it is in opposition to Christianity. Look what he said in verse 13: "For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure"—what did he do when he was serving the Jews' religion?—"I persecuted the church of God and wasted it." I want you to see that Judaism and Christianity are opposites. Now, I said that to tell you this. Listen carefully. There is no such animal as a Judeo-Christian religion. It can't possibly be. We may have a Hebrew Christian, or an Israelite Christian, or an Old Testament Christian, but there cannot be a Judeo-Christian because Judaism and Christianity are in opposition to each other. And you're going to find that Jesus Christ attacked Judaism over and over in the New Testament. Read Matthew 5. Read Matthew 15. Read Matthew 23. Read Mark 7. Over and over, He attacked Judaism and their traditions. And you remember, they asked Christ plainly in Matthew 15 and Mark 7, "Why do you transgress the traditions of the elders?" He said, "Why do you with your traditions make void the word of God or the commandments of God?"

So obviously there is a conflict. Now, when you understand there is no such thing as a Judeo-Christian religion, then you understand this, which most people get their minds blown when it's said. But here it is: Jesus Christ was not a Jew.

Jesus Christ Was Not a Jew

Weaver asserts Jesus was a Judahite by tribe but not a Jew religiously, as He opposed Judaism. He traces Jesus' life in Galilee and brief time in Judea.

Now stop and think about that. Jesus Christ did not embrace, advocate, or teach, or submit to Judaism. In fact, He was hated, He was despised by those who held Judaism, and ultimately, they crucified Him because He was against it. Now, let me just quote three verses. In Mark 14:1, the Bible says this:

Scripture Reading — Mark 14:1
"After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death."

The leaders in Judaism were seeking to put Him to death. In John 7:30, "Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come." John 10:39, "Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand."

Now, let me explain this. Jesus Christ was not a Jew. He was a Judahite. By that I mean He was born into the tribe of Judah. The Bible says He's the Lion of the tribe of Judah. But are you listening? Jesus Christ was not only a Judahite, Jesus Christ was also a Nazarene and He was also a Galilean. I'm going to show you something. It's interesting. I want you to look at this little map right here. I want you to look at this. I want to show you something. Look if you would please at Galilee way up at the top. See Galilee up there? Then below it is Cana, then Nazareth. Isn't that interesting? Did you know that Jesus Christ—and I'm going to use this word—but Jesus Christ was conceived, He was implanted, or at least His body was implanted in the Virgin Mary in Nazareth in the northern kingdom. He lived in the northern kingdom. I'm going to show you that He was only born in the southern kingdom. Now let me show you. I want you to look in your Bibles to the book of Luke chapter 1 and let's begin reading there with

verse 26. Luke 1:26. I don't know if you ever thought about this or not. Luke 1:26:

Scripture Reading — Luke 1:26-31
"And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women."

So the angel Gabriel came to her and he tells her in verse 31,

Scripture Reading — Luke 1:26-31
"And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS."

So where was Mary? Mary was in Nazareth. Where's Nazareth? Nazareth is in Galilee. Where are Galilee and Nazareth?

They're in the northern kingdom. Wow. Look in Luke chapter 2, beginning there with verse 4. Luke 2:4:

Scripture Reading — Luke 2:4-7
"And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered." "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

Now, notice if you would, even during her pregnancy, where was she? She was in Nazareth of Galilee. He only went to Judah and Bethlehem to be taxed because he himself was of the lineage of David. Now, watch what happens.

Let's go in our Bibles to the book of Matthew chapter 2. And let's begin reading there with verse 4. Matthew 2:4. We'll come back and pick up the first three verses a little bit later. "And when he had gathered all the chief priests"—this is Herod, by the way—well let's go back to verse 3. "When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests"—I told you they were under him—

"and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel." Notice "my people Israel." Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. "And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh."

"And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: and was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son." Now, I want you to note something. Here are the wise men. They've come to worship the Lord. Every time you see a nativity scene, you see the wise men there. The wise men were not at the nativity scene. Look in your Bibles, verse 9: "When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child"—not a baby, a young child—"was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house"—not a manger—"they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him." So there were no wise men at the birth of Christ. They came only after Christ was born and had become a young child and Mary and Joseph were living somewhere around Bethlehem at this particular time. And God told these wise men, do not go to Herod. So they went home another way and then God appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, get the young child and get Mary out, because Herod will seek the young child's life that he may kill him. So he took the child and went into Egypt. Now here's an interesting thing. Did you

know that Jesus Christ actually lived in Judea less than two years? Stop and think about it. Less than two years. He was a young child. How do we know that he lived in Judea less than two years? Well, look in Matthew 2 beginning there verse 16. Watch carefully.

Scripture Reading — Matthew 2:16-23
"Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men." "Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not."

So our Lord lived in Judah less than two years. When Herod died and they came back from Egypt, they did not go into the land of Judah. They did not go back to Bethlehem. They did not go back to Jerusalem. Look in your Bibles, Matthew 2, beginning with verse 19:

Scripture Reading — Matthew 2:16-23
"But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life. And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: and he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene."

And if you look back on those maps, you will see that Galilee is up in the northern kingdom, and so is Nazareth. So our Lord was in Judah less than two years. Now, here's a question.

Jesus as King of the Jews and Son of David

Weaver explains Jesus is King of the Jews not because of birthplace but as the true Son of David and Son of God, fulfilling Old Testament promises.

I want you to think. Here's the question. How could Jesus Christ be called the King of the Jews when He lived in Judea less than two years? He was a baby. Well, I want you to look in your Bibles to Matthew 2 again at verses 1 and 2. "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews?" Isn't that interesting? "Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him." So Jesus Christ was called the King of the Jews or the King of the Judahites because it refers to a people in a land or a nation when our Lord was less than two years of age. Wow. And of course Herod then inquires in verse 3 where He's going to be born. And they tell him "in Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet."

Now, they call Jesus Christ, in verse 2, the King of the Judeans. Remember if you would, look on the map, this southern kingdom, this southern nation is Judea. Are you listening? Jesus Christ is not only King of the Judeans, He is also King of Israel. How could Jesus Christ be called King of the Judeans if He only lived in Judea less than two years when He was a baby? You have to understand something. You say, well, He was born of the tribe of Judah. There are a lot of people who were born in the tribe of Judah who were not king. There are a lot of people born in Bethlehem who were not king. So, how could He be called the King of the Jews? Well, let me tell you here's the answer. Jesus Christ was not called the King of the Jews because He was born in Judea, nor simply because He was born in the tribe of Judah. Certainly He needed to be of the tribe of Judah in one sense of the word, but that was not the reason He was called King of the Jews.

If you will look back in your Bibles to Matthew 1:1, here is the beginning of the New Testament. And it begins very interestingly, for the Bible says, "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham." So this New Testament is about Jesus Christ who is, listen carefully, the true son of David and the true son of Abraham. Jesus Christ is King of the Jews or the Judahites by virtue of the fact that He is the son of David. He is King of Israel by virtue of the fact that He is the true son of David. Look in your Bibles to the book of Luke chapter 1. Luke 1, and let's begin reading there with verse 31. Here's Gabriel talking to Mary, and look what he tells her. Luke 1:31: "And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest."

"And the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob"—not just the house of Judah, the house of Jacob, all Israel—"for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end." But note, if you would, "and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David." Jesus Christ is the true son of David. Solomon was the type. Jesus Christ is the antitype or the fulfillment of it. Okay, look in your Bibles to Acts 13 beginning with verse 21. Acts 13:21: "And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will."

Now watch: "Of this man's seed"—that's Jesus Christ—"hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus." Do you see that? Jesus Christ is the true Son of David. Look in your Bibles to the book of Romans chapter 1. It's amazing how many times the New Testament shows us and teaches us this same truth. Notice Romans 1:1: "Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead." So the Bible says He was made of the seed of David according to the flesh, but He was declared to be the Son of God with power. So Jesus Christ is not only the true son of Abraham. You remember Isaac? "In Isaac shall thy seed be called."

So Isaac was the type, Christ is the antitype. Isaac was the picture, Christ is the reality. He's the son of David. Solomon was the picture, Jesus Christ is the reality. Solomon the type, Jesus Christ the antitype. He's the fulfillment. So Jesus Christ is not only the son of David and the son of Abraham, He's also the Son of God and consequently He's King of everything and everyone. He's not only King of the Jews. He's King of Israel. He's King of Jacob. He's King of America. He's King of Russia. He's King of kings and Lord of lords. Let me show you.

Look in your Bibles to Psalm 2. Psalm 2 and let's begin there with verse 6. Psalm 2:6. Look what God says in light of the rebellion of all the kings and rulers of this world against Him. Psalm 2, in fact, let's look at verse 1: "Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us." Now watch: "He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision." "Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure." Look what he says: "Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession." What did He say? "Yet have I set my King." My King. Jesus Christ is God's King. He's King of everything. Look in your Bibles to the book of Colossians chapter 1. Colossians 1.

And let's begin reading there with verse 15. Colossians 1. And notice if you would please verse 15. We're still talking about Jesus Christ. He's not only the son of David and son of Abraham, He's the Son of God. The Bible says, "Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: for by him"—that is by Jesus Christ—"were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist"—that is, or have their being. Jesus Christ is God. Yes, He's the son of David. Yes, He's the son of Abraham, but Jesus Christ is God. Look in your Bibles to 1 Timothy chapter 6. Watch if you would 1 Timothy 6 at verses 15 and 16. 1 Timothy 6:15. In fact, let's read verse 14 just so that you can see Jesus Christ is in the context.

Verse 14, Paul tells Timothy "that thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: which in his times he shall shew"—that is He shall demonstrate—"who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen." So how can Jesus Christ be King of the Jews if He only lived in Judea less than two years?

Because He's the true son of David. He's the true son of Abraham. He's the Son of God. And He's King of everything.

Applications and Conclusion

Weaver applies the lesson: not all who claim Jewish descent are true Jews; Scripture must be compared with Scripture. He reiterates Jesus was a Judahite, not a religious Jew.

Now, just a couple of quick applications. The first one is this. Jesus Christ was not a Jew. He was a Judean. He was born of the tribe of Judah. But He was not a Jew in the sense that He did not embrace the religion of Judaism. He did not embrace Pharisaism. He did not embrace the traditions of the Jews. That is why they hated Him. That is why they persecuted Him and crucified Him, because He constantly and continually violated their traditions. I read to you from Revelation 2 and Revelation 3 where our Lord said there are some who say they're Jews and are not. So you have to understand that not everyone who professes to be a Jew, that is from the tribe of Judah or the land of Judea, is necessarily a Jew. The only way they can become a Jew is by embracing Judaism. Do you remember Sammy Davis, a black entertainer, embraced Judaism and was considered a Jew. He was certainly not—it could not have possibly been any other way other than by religion.

You understand what I'm saying? And just because someone claims to be a descendant of Abraham does not make them a descendant of Abraham. I can claim to be a descendant of Abraham, but that doesn't necessarily make me a descendant of Abraham. I could claim to be a descendant of Julius Caesar, but that doesn't make me a descendant of Julius Caesar. So He says there are some who claim and who are not, just like there are plenty in the churches today who claim to be Christians and are not. Interestingly enough, we have to understand that when it comes to scriptural truth, when it comes to theology, we have to do what the Bible commands us to do in 1 Corinthians 2:13 where it says we must compare spiritual things with spiritual. Or let me say it another way, we compare Scripture with Scripture.

Somebody will say, well, I've never seen this before in my life. Well, that's probably because you've never studied it before in your life as well. You've never thought some of these things through. And the problem is this: we have been taught wrongly most of our lives. Most of us have never studied; we've just assumed that whatever we have heard, whatever we have been taught as children, whatever we've been taught in our churches, we've been just assuming that it's scriptural and right. When it's not. When it's not.

I have come to the conclusion that old black preacher was right when he said, and I'm quoting, "that their Bible showed us shed a whole lot of light on them commentaries." And it does. The Bible sheds a whole lot of light on a lot of things. So let me just put it to you very bluntly. Jesus Christ was not a Jew. He was a Judahite. He was from the tribe of Judah. He was also a Nazarene. He was also a Galilean. But He was not Jewish. I saw an acquaintance who had a cap on one time, and across that cap was written, "My boss was a Jewish carpenter," and I thought to myself, no, He was not Jewish. He was a Judahite. He was from the tribe of Judah. He was a Nazarene. He was a Galilean, but He was not Jewish because He did not embrace the religion of Judaism. Let's pray. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we thank You for Your grace and Your mercy and Your help us, Lord, as we go through this study, and teach us, we pray. Open our eyes. Give us, Lord, Thy Word and Thy truth. In the name of Jesus Christ, we ask and pray. Amen.

Study Guide

Major Themes

Biblical Definition of 'Jew'

Summary: The term 'Jew' in Scripture primarily refers to inhabitants of the southern kingdom of Judah, not all Israelites, and later to adherents of Judaism.

Evidence: Weaver states, 'It is improper as well as unbiblical to refer to all Israelites as Jews' and explains the first use in 2 Kings 16:6.

Distinction Between Ethnicity and Religion

Summary: Weaver distinguishes between being a Judahite (ethnic/tribal) and being a Jew (religious adherent of Judaism), emphasizing that Jesus was the former but not the latter.

Evidence: He says, 'Jesus Christ was not a Jew. He was a Judahite. He was from the tribe of Judah. He was also a Nazarene. He was also a Galilean. But He was not Jewish.'

Opposition Between Judaism and Christianity

Summary: Judaism and Christianity are presented as antagonistic systems, with Judaism's leaders persecuting Christ and the apostles.

Evidence: Weaver cites Galatians 1:13 where Paul persecuted the church while in the Jews' religion, and says, 'Judaism and Christianity are opposites.'

Jesus as the True Son of David and King

Summary: Jesus' kingship over the Jews and all creation is rooted in His identity as the promised Son of David and the divine Son of God.

Evidence: Weaver references Matthew 1:1, Luke 1:31-33, and Psalm 2 to show Jesus inherits David's throne and is God's anointed King.

Hermeneutical Principles

Summary: Weaver emphasizes interpreting Scripture with Scripture, using the law of first mention and comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

Evidence: He explains the law of first mention for 'Jew' in 2 Kings 16:6 and cites 1 Corinthians 2:13.

Modern Jewish Identity and the Khazar Theory

Summary: Weaver introduces the idea that many modern Jews are Khazars with no Semitic blood, supported by DNA studies and Jewish scholars.

Evidence: He quotes Dr. Elhaik: 'There are no blood or family connections among the Jews... Their genome is largely Khazar.'

Key Arguments

Not All Israelites Are Jews

Summary: The Bible uses 'Jew' to refer specifically to those from the tribe, land, or kingdom of Judah, not the northern tribes.

Evidence: Weaver says, 'The original Judahites were Israelites, but not all Israelites were Judahites,' and cites Paul identifying as a Benjamite in Romans 11:1.

Jesus Opposed Judaism

Summary: Jesus did not embrace Judaism; He attacked its traditions and was crucified by its leaders.

Evidence: Weaver references Matthew 15 and Mark 7 where Jesus confronts traditions, and says, 'He was hated, He was despised by those who held Judaism, and ultimately, they crucified Him.'

Jesus' Kingship Is Based on Davidic Lineage

Summary: Jesus is King of the Jews because He is the true Son of David, not merely because of birthplace or tribe.

Evidence: Weaver states, 'Jesus Christ is King of the Jews or the Judahites by virtue of the fact that He is the son of David,' citing Matthew 1:1 and Luke 1:32.

Judaism and Christianity Are Incompatible

Summary: The term 'Judeo-Christian' is a misnomer because the two religions are fundamentally opposed.

Evidence: Weaver says, 'There is no such animal as a Judeo-Christian religion. It can't possibly be... Judaism and Christianity are in opposition to each other.'

Modern Jews May Not Be Descendants of Abraham

Summary: DNA evidence suggests Ashkenazi Jews are largely of Khazar origin, not Semitic.

Evidence: Weaver quotes research: 'Many of the maternal ancestors of modern Ashkenazi Jews were European converts... descended not from the Near East, but from Southern and Western Europe.'
